Base fee:
  • The event is $5 per person. Lunch is optional at an additional $12 per person.

    MOCA prefers payment online when you RSVP, or choose "invoice me" to pay at the door on the day of the event.

    Either way, registering for the event ahead of time helps us plan for adequate seating and meals for lunch, so we very much appreciate it!

9:15-9:45 Cemeteries in College Curriculum

Caitlin Lampman, Riverside Cemetery Association and Muskie Archives, will discuss her work incorporating the cemetery into the Bates College curriculum.

9:45-10:00 Break, Displays

10:00-10:30 Mapping Riverside

Sam Howes, Riverside Cemetery Association and Muskie Archives, will discuss the group’s efforts to create a more accurate map of the cemetery.

10:30-11:00 MOCA Q&A

11:00-11:30 Ron Romano

Ron will update us on his project regarding Maine’s Civil War gravestones decorated with carved soldiers. He’ll then present highlights from his new book, Stories from Maine Cemeteries - Lives Cut Short. [The book will be available for $20 cash/check at the meeting].

11:30 Lunch

Access to the full lunch menu from Bates College’s dining hall in Commons for $12. The Commons Daily Menu will be available up to a week in advance on their website.

1:00-2:00 Tour of Riverside Cemetery

Directions to  Riverside Cemetery at 192 Summer Street: From Main Street turn onto Riverside Street just south of Aspire Family Dentistry  (there is a large blue and white sign). Continue until the road ends at the intersection of Summer Street and Riverside Street. The cemetery gates are located on this corner. Some parking is available in the cemetery and street parking is also available.

*Please note that Central Avenue is closed for construction this summer. Street parking is available on Campus Avenue, College Street, or other side streets. Dedicated visitor parking is available along Bardwell Street (directly off of Russell Street) and in the lot across from the Olin Arts Center. More detailed information about campus can be found on the campus map.

Commons (pictured below) is just a short walk from Bardwell Street and is located just south of Garcelon Field.
