Midcoast Maine Green Burial (MMGB) will present an adapted version of their educational PowerPoint introducing the basics of green burial, based on materials available through their website (midcoastmainegreenburial.org). The presentation will also include practical considerations for cemeterians who may be exploring the creation of green burial sections within existing cemeteries.

Following the presentation, we will view the short educational film Steelmantown, which tells the story of a man who returns to an abandoned cemetery to find his uncle’s grave and ultimately transforms the property into a green burial cemetery. The film includes reflections from volunteers and families, and concludes with a funeral service held there. MMGB has received permission from the filmmaker to show this film for educational purposes. (Approx. 27 minutes)

The evening will conclude with questions and discussion.

PRESENTERS

Krista Meinersmann is a retired nurse educator, interfaith chaplain, and former hospice volunteer. Her interest in green burial grew from her work supporting individuals and families at the end of life. Her mission is to educate others about this environmentally conscious option.

Jean Matlack, after raising a family and a career as a psychologist and psychotherapist, became deeply involved in environmental issues. She was surprised to learn about the carbon footprint associated with conventional burial and cremation and believes green burial offers a meaningful, earth-friendly alternative.

This promises to be an informative and thought-provoking program for anyone interested in the future of cemetery practice in Maine.

All programs begin at 6 p.m. and run approximately 60-90 minutes. Registration will open first to MOCA members before being offered to the general public. Participation is limited to the first 100 registrants. While the programs are free, a donation is appreciated. All proceeds will benefit MOCA’s education and training programs.
