Black Jacks - African American Seamen in the Age of Sail

Author, professor of history at the University of New Hampshire, and former professional mariner, W. Jeffrey Bolster will discuss his ground-breaking work on black mariners in the 18th century. He will introduce us to a new understanding of Portland's thriving black community during that time and its link to a little known aspect of the maritime economy during the age of sail.

Lectures begin at 1:30 PM at the Wishcamper Center, Bedford St. on the USM Portland Campus, with parking in the USM Bedford St. garage. Lectures are free, though donations are gratefully accepted.

Presented by Spirits Alive of Eastern Cemetery. Spirits Alive is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of historic Eastern Cemetery (founded 1668) at the foot of Munjoy Hill on Congress St.
