Project Description

We have revived the 25-year-old Stewards to conserve and repair gravestones, install new fences and surrounding paths, restore historic fencing, and construct a tool shed in Portland’s city-owned Western Cemetery.

Following MOCA and other training in 2021, volunteers began work in 2022. Joe Ferrannini has been hired to help every year since.

We have cleaned and repaired more than 200 stones. Hundreds remain to be done in the 12-acre cemetery that doubles as a public green space in the city’s West End.
